To stack or not to stack??
Imagine storage and retrieval in a single step, well stack help you do that. Here value types are stored in this area of memory. It is a container or repository and abstract data types or structures entity, reference, operating in/from, LIFO, (last in, first out) or FILO (first in, last out), guiding principles underpinning it. It is an example of a linear data structure, like array, queue, deque, heap, linked list, or stack.
It refers to the storage of information (especially temporary ones), in stacks or piles, rather than CPU’s. Stacks are used in the basic design of operating systems for example, to enable things like interrupt handling and operating system function calls. The main functionality is pushing and out-putting of data, the main, two basic operations.
The dynamic array, linked lists are commonly strong utilisers of this capability and node(s), memory centers. It is common-use for runtime memory management and security measures, to protect against breaches and attacks. A stack class is a non-generic collection of objects, to be found in the System.Collections namespace, and mscorlib (in mscorlib.dll) assembly. It is implemented as a circular buffer, with increasing capacity as objects are added. Working with collections and generics it is a .NET Framework enabler. It is used for user-defined, custom types, structs. Pointers of reference types are also stored on the stack. Track-changes and undone are good examples of its application.
Key Exam Points
- Review the chapter detailing the nature and use of stack for collections, generics, undo, tracking changes and other related functionalities, programmic needs.
- For the exam, study examples for use, fit, function and dynamics, real-life, practice and lab scenarios, that help you to gain a better understanding of this term and topic.
